Theisen is Key Player Off Falcon Bench

UWRF Sports Information

In order for a machine to operate effectively and efficiently, it needs every piece to do its part. Senior and one of the leaders of the UW-River Falls women’s basketball team, Katie Theisen, is an integral piece of a team that is currently tied for first place in the WIAC standings.

“Katie has been a very important role player for our team. She’s a tremendous shooter and can make things happen on defense. I haven’t seen a shooter with the quickness and accuracy that Katie demonstrates,” said Falcon women’s basketball Coach Cindy Holbrook.

Holbrook has led the team through the season. “I think my head coach is smart and knows the game well. We are always prepared for games, which is appreciated by all of us,” Theisen expressed.

Theisen, who has the third highest three-point shooting percentage and second most three-point-shots made on the team, comes off the bench and plays shooting guard for the Falcons.
“I enjoy mostly everything about basketball, mostly shooting threes,” Theisen said.

The women’s team holds a record of 17-4, with only two losses on its home court.

“I think this year’s team is special because it’s not very often you can start 13-0 in a season. And even though we have a few losses thus far, I think we are playing extraordinary as a team,” Theisen, a senior from Andover, Minn., explained.

This year Theisen has averaged 3.2 points per game and has been a key contributor in the three-point game.

She started playing basketball back in second grade. “Everyone else in my family played hockey.” But, Theisen said she enjoyed basketball instead. In high school, she also played golf and softball, but always stood out in basketball.

“In high school, my greatest accomplishment was making it to the high school state tournament,” Theisen said.

Theisen expects to graduate this spring and begin her career. She is majoring in sociology. “I would like to be a probation officer,” Theisen said.

The Falcon season continues on Saturday at Stevens Point, Feb. 17 at La Crosse and Feb. 20 at Platteville. The team, including Theisen, is looking to compete in the WIAC tournament in late February.
