Women’s basketball: UW-River Falls building toward top of WIAC

By John Casper Jr.
Leader-Telegram staff
In Cindy Hovet’s first season at UW-River Falls, the Falcons finished tied for third in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. In the past eight years, they’ve never finished higher than fourth. But that may be starting to change. The Falcons are young but show promise. The 10-player roster has just two seniors and two juniors, but a strong freshman class and a solid group of recruits coming in next year.

It appears that UW-River Falls’ days at the bottom of the WIAC are coming to an end.

“I think we’ve had a couple opportunities the last nine years where we’ve been right at the corner,” Hovet said after Saturday’s 55-51 loss to UW-Eau Claire at Zorn Arena. “With this group I feel like we’re sneaking around the corner right now. We’re bringing in some nice players next year and we’re very excited about where we’re going.”

And, for the first time, some of those recruits are from the Chippewa Valley.

The Falcons (9-6, 3-4) already have an Altoona connection in their backcourt. Jenna Hanson, one of the team’s two seniors, transferred from Winona State before the 2007-’08 season and is the team’s starting point guard. Freshman Tiffany Gregorich, a Leader-Telegram All-Northwest first-team pick last season, came to UW-River Falls largely because of Hanson. Brittany Gregorich, Tiffany’s sister and an All-Northwest second-team pick last season, is part of the incoming crop of recruits.

“We’ve been trying to recruit this area more the last few years,” Hovet said. “This has been an area that Eau Claire and Stout have had a little bit of a hold on, but we’ve been trying to break into that.

“Once positive word gets out about your program, it really helps recruiting.”

Getting the Gregoriches is a nice first step. Tiffany Gregorich, who was recruited hard by UW-Stout, has made a big impact right away, leading the team in scoring (13.4 points per game) despite coming off the bench. Brittany Gregorich chose the Falcons over interest from UW-Stout and UW-Eau Claire.

“I’d like to see more girls from this area go to River Falls, but they get a lot of girls from the Twin Cities,” Tiffany Gregorich said. “I’m hoping they will. I’m hoping that others see me and Brittany here and say ‘I know them, I want to go there.’”

Even if they can’t break into the Chippewa Valley, the Falcons draw several players from the Twin Cities area. Hovet said she has three players coming from Minnesota next season, including Lindsey Olson, a post player from Plainview, Minn., that should contribute right away.

Not only does Hovet feel like the program is turning the corner, her players are expecting to battle for a conference championship before their college careers are done.

“Our freshmen recruits this year are really good and we made a pact with each other that we are going to stay all four years,” Tiffany Gregorich said. “If we stay together the next four years, we can make something of it. With the girls we have above us, and my sister and the girls that are coming in next year, we can make something of it.”

Hovet has supporters within the conference. She played for and coached with Mark Thomas at UW-Stout, earning player of the year honors in 1994.

“She’s done a good job,” Thomas said. “She’s stuck with it, stuck to her guns, stuck to her principles. Any program that’s ever going to be successful, that’s what you have to do. You’ve got to stick to your principles and battle through some lean years when things happen that are out of your control, and she’s been able to do that.”

Hovet hopes those lean years are coming to an end, but like Thomas said, she’s not going to change how she does things. Unlike other coaches, Hovet doesn’t have a 20-player roster, preferring a 12- to 16-player roster which she said helps with team chemistry and provides for more individual attention. She also wants unselfish players that put the team first.

“I think we do things right,” Hovet said. “We have positive team kids. Once we start to draw a few of the better players from the area and once word gets out, it will make a difference.”

Here is what WEAU TV 13 from Eau Claire had to say.

River Falls Upsets #5 Eau Claire Women

Leading throughout the first 30 minutes of the game, the fifth-ranked UW-Eau Claire women’s basketball team was upended late by WIAC opponent UW-River Falls, losing tonight 69-63.

The Blugolds struggled offensively tonight, shooting 34 percent from the field in the first and second half. The Falcons didn’t fare well in the first half either, shooting just 33 percent in the first half, but they turned it on in the second half shooting 52.4 percent to put the Blugolds away.

River Falls started the game with a slim lead through the first nine minutes. A three pointer from Heather Witt (Sr.-Kendall, Wis./Royall) gave Eau Claire a 13-12 lead at the 10:44 mark, which they would keep for the remainder of the half. Heading into the recess, the Blugolds had a 31-25 lead.

The start of the second half was much of the same for the Blugolds, as they kept a lead through the first 10 minutes. At the 9:48 mark, the Falcons took the lead on a Lauren Pellowski three and never looked back. Eau Claire played from behind the rest of the game and was outscored 31-23 in the final nine minutes to give the Falcons the stunning upset.

Jodi Lindner (Jr.-Neillsville, Wis.) came off the bench to score 16 points in 20 minutes to lead Eau Claire. Katie Weinberg (So.-Dresser, Wis./St. Croix Falls) chipped in with 12, while the Blugolds’ big three of Witt, Heidi Arciszewski (Sr.-Thorp, Wis.) and Hannah Mesick (So.-Chatfield, Minn.) were held to just 26 points combined on eight-of-29 shooting.

Falcons Fall 61-43 at UWP

Posted by Falcons Fan on January 31, 2009

The women’s basketball team traveled to UW-Platteville to face the Pioneers. Despite a hard battle, UWRF fell to UWP 61-43

Taylor House lead all Falcon scorers with 13 points. Alise Holst had 10, and Tiffany Gregorich and Maranda Dohrn had seven and six points respectively. Dohrn had the most Falcon rebounds with nine. House added eight.

As a team, River Falls shot 32.7 percent (18-55) from the field, a dismall 11.8 percent (2-17) from the three-point line, and 33.3 percent (5-15) from the free throw line.

House shot 6-12 (50.0 percent) from the field. Holst and Dohrn shot 5-9 (55.6 percent) and 3-6 (50.0) percent from the field respectively, as well. The team’s only three-point baskets came from Gregorich and Jenna Hanson.

UWRF struggled to find an answer for Platteville’s Brianna Klaas who scored 14 points, and Lisa Grantman. Grantman had 16 points and 15 rebounds, scoring her 8th career double-double and setting her career high in rebounds.

This loss puts the Falcons at 3-7 in the WIAC and 9-9 overall. The Pioneers take sole possesion of the 6th ranked spot in the WIAC, advancing to 4-7 (7-12 overall).

UWRF will head to UW-Superior to face the Yellowjackets on Feb. 4 at 5 p.m. On Feb. 7, the women will play host to UW-Eau Claire. Tip-off is scheudled for 7 p.m.
Game Box Score

Here is what UW Platteville had to say.

UW-Platteville surged past UW-River Falls into sixth place in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference by beating the Falcons 61-43 Saturday on Bo Ryan Court.

The Pioneers, winners of consecutive games for the first time all season, moved to 4-7 in the WIAC and 7-12 overall. The Falcons, who beat the Pioneers by 23 on Dec. 13, fell to 3-7, 9-9.

“The intensity level is something we haven’t seen all year,” Pioneer Coach Tina Kuhle said. “They played hard for all 40 minutes. When River Falls made a run, we didn’t get rattled. We balanced things up and got into our offense. Of course, when Lisa Grantman has 16 points and 15 rebounds, that helps, too.”

Grantman recorded her eighth career double double and broke her previous career high for rebounds by one. The Pioneers’ lone senior also moved into ninth place on the school career scoring list at 963 points.

Brianna Klas added 14 points, and Ashley Wolf had 8 for the Pioneers, who led 34-26 at the half. Klaas scored the first basket of the second half, and Charity Stotmeister made two free throws for a 38-26 lead, and UWP never allowed the deficit under 10 points the rest of the way.

Taylor House scored 13, and Alise Holst had 10 for the Falcons. Freshman guard Tiffany Gregorich, who had 29 points in the 78-55 Falcon win in December, was held to seven points on 2-7 shooting.

“We watched a lot of video from that first game, and we wrote down on paper what we needed to do defensively, especially against her and the big girls in the post,” Kuhle said. “I thought Lisa Grantman, Dru Schneider and Mallory Mau all executed the post game plan very well. They stuck with what we did in practice, and good things happened.”

The coach was especially pleased with her team’s passing and court recognition. The Pioneers did perhaps their best job of the year against full-court pressure and staying patient on offense.

“They’re starting to see things better,” she said. “Instead of just three-point shot after three-point shot, wer’e getting the ball inside. It’s not always going to get a shot, but it’s going to create other shots for open players on the other side.”

UWP played in front of one of the largest Alumni Day gatherings, and for the first time in Kuhle’s five years as the head coach, the Pioneers won on Alumni Day.

“It feels great; I’m not going to lie,” she said.
