UW-Stevens Point’s Petersen Tops All-WIAC Women’s Basketball Team; Egner Named Coach of the Year, Three Falcons Honored

Posted by Falcons Fan on March 1, 2011

MADISON, Wis.–University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point’s Britta Petersen was chosen the Player of the Year to lead the 10 individuals selected to the 2010-11 All-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Women’s Basketball Team by the league coaches, while Pointers head coach Shirley Egner was selected the Coach of the Year.

Petersen’s selection marks the fourth time that a UW-Stevens Point player has secured the WIAC Player of the Year honor. She claimed first team recognition for the third straight season and ranks second in the WIAC with a .576 field goal percentage, third with 14.3 points per game, seventh with 1.85 steals per game and 10th with 2.38 assists per game.

Petersen has reached double-figures in scoring in 21 of 26 games played, including a season-high 25 points in the season opener against University of St. Thomas (Minn.). She surpassed the 20-point mark six times and produced three double-doubles (points-rebounds). Petersen ranks fourth on the school’s all-time scoring list with 1,460 points.

Repeat selections on the first team from a year ago included: UW-Eau Claire’s Hannah Mesick, UW-La Crosse’s Dana Churchill, UW-River Falls’ Tiffany Gregorich and UW-Stevens Point’s Andrea Flease.

The five-member All-Defensive Team included Gregorich, Flease and UW-La Crosse’s Danielle Frank as repeat choices from last season.

Egner secured the coaching honor for the fourth time in her career after directing UW-Stevens Point to the fifth WIAC regular-season championship in program history. The Pointers compiled a 16-0 record during the conference slate to become the sixth team to accomplish the feat since the league went to a 16-game schedule during the 1985-86 campaign. UW-Stevens Point will take a school-record 18-game winning streak into the NCAA Division III Championship.

An All-Sportsmanship Team was chosen for individuals that displayed exemplary sportsmanship throughout the season. It included one member from each school.

Tiffany Gregorich is a Team Leader

Posted by Falcons Fan on February 20, 2011

Junior is One of WIAC’s Top Players

As the only healthy captain on the team,Tiffany Gregorich (Altoona, Altoona), has proven to be a strong leader on the Falcon women’s basketball squad by averaging about 14 points per game this season.

In 2010 Gregorich was name to the  All-WIAC team, to the WIAC All-Defensive team, and was named the team’s Outstanding Offensive Player, Best Free Throw Percentage and to the WIAC Scholastic Honor Roll. In 2009 she earned All-WIAC honorable mention, and the team’s Outstanding Offensive Player award and to the WIAC Scholastic Honor Roll.

This year Gregorich, whose sister,Brittany Gregorich (Altoona, Altoona), is also a member of the team, leads the team averaging 14.3 points a game. She also averages 4.1 rebounds a game and is second on the team in steals (50) and third in assists (43).

Gregorich grew up in Altoona, Wis., and attended high school there. She played four years of high school basketball and one year of AAU. Gregorich came to UW-River Falls in the fall of 2008. “ I came to River Falls because it was close to home and my sister was in her senior year of high school so I could come home and watch her games and, also, my older sister was a senior at River Falls at the time.”Gregorich met Falcon Head Coach, Cindy Holbrook, when she was only in 8th grade. “ Tiff came to the River Falls basketball camp when she was in 8th grade, you could tell even as an eight grader she was a player you should follow,” said Holbrook.

When Gregorich was in high school she had three different knee injuries.  “I’ve tore just about everything possible in my knee,” said Gregorich. She endured injuries in her same knee in 2006, 2007 and 2008. Gregorich tore her ACL the summer before her senior year of high school, which required surgery. “It was horrible; I missed two-thirds of my volleyball season and rehab was really hard,” said Gregorich.

She’s been  a leader for the Falcons. “Tiff adds a competitive edge to our team. It rubs off on the people who she’s around,” said Holbrook. Holbrook said Gregorich is a great leader vocally and by example.

Gregorich is a junior and is debating between majors right now. “I’m stuck between biology and accounting. After this semester I will declare what I want to do. If I choose accounting I want to be a CPA if I choose biology I’d like to pursue physical therapy,” said Gregorich.
