From Concordia-Moorhead website:Record-Setting Start Falls One Point Short

Posted by Falcons Fan on December 30, 2010

MOORHEAD, Minn. (12/29/10)– The streak is over. Concordia’s six-game unbeaten streak to start the 2010-11 season is officially over. The Cobbers fell behind by 20 points early in the second half against UW-River Falls and staged a late-game rally but unfortunately came up one point short in their bid to win a record-setting seven straight games to start a season.

The Cobbers missed a chance to win the game in final :15 seconds of play and lost 63-62 to the Falcons. Concordia senior Lindsey Schultz had a game-high 156 points and freshman Alexandra Lippert had seven blocks. The Falcons had three players finish in double figures and were led by Brittany Gregorich who finished with 14 points and a game-high eight rebounds.

Concordia was outscored 46-27 in the first half and then gave the first point of the second half to trail by 20 with just over 19:00 to play in the game. The Cobbers then whittled away at the lead and got to within one point with 4:50 left in the second half. CC then had  a chance to win the game after forcing a missed shot with :15 to play but a 3-point field goal attempt by Tricia Sorensen was off the mark and the subsequent loose-ball scrum never allowed the Cobbers a clear attempt in the dying seconds.

The Cobbers held UW-River Falls to just 17 points in the second half which included a 10:50 stretch where the Falcons did not connect on a single field goal attempt. Concordia’s defense limited River Falls to just 21.7% (5-for-23) shooting from the field in the final 20 minutes.

Unfortunately for Concordia the first half was the complete opposite as the Cobbers were still in Christmas vacation mode and the Falcon full-court pressure defense held CC to just 28.6% (8-for-28) shooting from the floor and 11.1% (1-for-9) from outside the arc. Concordia committed seven turnovers in the first half and was bothered by the full-court press.

Concordia turned the game around in the second half and was able to connect on field goals after fast-break attempts and keep the Falcons off the boards. The difference in the second half led to an 18-point difference and a chance to pull out the win in the final seconds.

Besides the 16 points from Schultz, three other CC starters finished in double figures in scoring. Schultz also had a team-high seven rebounds in the game. Erica Nord, who played only seven minutes in the first half due to foul trouble, finished with 13 points. Lippert added 11 points to go with her seven blocks. She has now had at least five blocks in three of the last four games. Maggie Bauernfeind added 10 points as the Cobber starters accounted for 56 of the team’s 62 points.

Alise Holst and Taylor House combined for 21 points in the game for the Falcons. Holst had 11 points and six rebounds while House scored 10 points and matched Gregorich’s team-high eight bounds.

Concordia will now finish off the 2010-11 season against MIAC opponents. The Cobbers will head back to conference play when they host Macalester on Monday, Jan. 3 at 5:45 p.m

The Falcon women’s basketball team survived a scare at Concordia-Moorhead on Wednesday night, winning 63-62.

The game was a tale of two halves, but the Falcons came out ahead when the final buzzer sounded.

The first half had the Falcons jump to a 19-point lead to close out the half. After Concordia scored the opening basket 21 seconds into the game, the Falcons never looked back. It would prove to be Concordia’s only lead of the night. After that, it was all Falcons as they streaked their way to a 46-27 lead at the half.

The second half however, was an opposite tale for the Falcons. Concordia slowly chipped away at the Falcon lead, including an 8-0 run midway through the second half.  Concordia came within a point five times in the closing minutes, but the Falcons proved their resilience and finished the game ahead by one, never relinquishing the lead throughout the half.

The largest lead for the Falcons was 20, with 19:39 to go in the game. But the Falcons went on a dry spell hitting just one bucket in about an 11 minute stretch in the second half.

The Falcons used a balanced attack to close out the game, with three players scoring in double figures.

Brittany Gregorich (Altoona, Altoona) had a strong night for the Falcons. She finished with 14 points and eight rebounds. Her 14 points led the Falcons on the evening, and her eight rebounds were tied for the lead withTaylor House (Maple Grove, MN, Maple Grove). House also added 10 points. Alise Holst (Plainview, MN, Plainview-Elgin-Millville) rounded out the double-digit scoring, contributing 10 in the winning effort.

Tess Lardie (Eagan, MN, Eagan) led the Falcons in steals with three. As a team, the Falcons had eight on the night, while forcing 10 turnovers by Concordia.

The Falcons bench had another strong performance, tallying 19 points during the game. Concordia’s bench had a mere six.

Lindsey Schultz of Concordia led all scorers with 16 points. Concordia had four players in double figures.

The Falcons shot .382 from field goal range, connecting on 21-55 shots. Concordia finished at a lower .339 finishing 19-56.

The Falcons improve to 9-3 on the season. Concordia meanwhile suffered its first lost of the season and are now 6-1. The Falcons are now on a three-game win streak.

Up next for the Falcons is a non-conference match against the Saints of St. Scholastica.  Tip-off is set for Thursday at 5:30 p.m. in Duluth, Minn. The Falcons are 14-9 all time against St. Scholastica.

Taylor in the House Saturday night

Posted by Falcons Fan on December 19, 2010

When Taylor House walked into the Karger Center Saturday she was wearing her superman cape. “IT was a special day for me because I was at my high school alumni night on Friday night and I was honored with a superman cape. It was a big game going into the Holiday break and it was important to go into the break with a win. Coach would not let me wear the cape but it did inspire me” said House.

Taylor had 24 points, 7 rebounds and one foul. “I want to thank the ref’s for letting me play my game” Taylor said.

Coach Babler said “Taylor is very talented and can do this for us. We would like to see her play each game with 10 plus points and 10 plus rebounds along with great defense”

From Concordia Website: UW-River Falls downs CUW women 71-57

Posted by Falcons Fan on December 19, 2010

Bigger, faster, stronger” was the way Falcon mentor Stacey Brunner-Jones described the UW-River Falls team that defeated her Concordia squad Saturday evening.

“We battled,” said Brunner-Jones, “but we did not play smart down the stretch at all.”

CUW trailed 33-28 at the half and the deficit remained from 5-7 points until River Falls outscored Concordia 12-2 over the final five minutes.

Freshman Katie Luethe led Concordia (now 6-5 on the season) with 13 points but the winners’ Taylor House dominated play with 24 points and 7 rebounds.

Taylor House Has Career Day, Leads Women’s Basketball Team to Victory 71-57

Posted by Falcons Fan on December 19, 2010

UWRF Sports Information

Taylor House (Maple Grove, MN, Maple Grove) dropped a career high 24 points against Concordia University (Wis.) on Saturday evening to lead the Falcons to a decisive 71-57 victory. House’s 24 points is the most by any Falcon this season and the most since Tiffany Gregorich (Altoona, Altoona) put in 30 last year at Eau Claire.

Saturday marked the first meeting between the two schools as River Falls continues their dominance outside the WIAC.  The Falcons have won 20 of their last 23 non-conference games and have been perfect in these contests at the Karges Center over the last three years, posting a 15-0 record.

The Falcons dominated the game from start-to-finish as they only trailed for a brief stint in the first half. After falling behind 7-6 for a mere 28 seconds, the Falcons put Concordia away for good by compiling a 16-3 run and owning the inside presence all night.

The Falcons had a commanding edge inside, outrebounding Concordia 43-23, while outscoring them 34-8 in the paint.

Concordia had no answer for House as she was 64.7% (11-17) from the field, grabbed seven rebounds, two assists, a block and a steal to go with her career-best 24 points. House had a huge week for the Falcons as she poured in 12 points, six rebounds and three steals earlier this week against Hamline.

Maranda Dohrn (Lake City, MN, Lake City) added her fourth double-double of the season as she scored 11 points and 12 rebounds. Brittany Gregorich (Altoona, Altoona) also scored double figures for the second straight game as she put in 11 points, eight rebounds, three assists and three steals.

Alise Holst (Plainview, MN, Plainview-Elgin-Millville) has been averaging 15 points per game in the absence of Tiffany Gregorich and had another big night with 10 points and six rebounds. Holst has scored at least 10 points in each of the last four games.

The Falcons had one of their best shooting nights of the season as they eclipsed the 50-percent mark for just the third time this season. The first half was highlighted with the team shooting 53.6 percent, the defense creating 8 steals, and scoring 19 points on turnovers. In the second half the Falcons continued to wear down Concordia en route to their second victory this week.

Concordia was riding a four-game winning streak entering Saturday’s contest but drop to 6-4 on the year. Whereas River Falls improves to 8-3, by winning their fifth straight non-conference game.

The Falcons are off next week for the holidays and return to action on Wednesday, Dec. 29 at Concordia-Moorhead College. Tip-Off is at 5:45 p.m.

From Hamline website: Pipers drop final game of 2010 calendar year to Falcons

Posted by Falcons Fan on December 15, 2010

Mary Wilkowski had a game-high 24 points, but the Hamline University women’s basketball team dropped a 67-52 road non-conference game at UW-River Falls on Tuesday night.

UW-River Falls jumped out to a 12-0 lead in the first three and a half minutes of play, extending it to a 13-point lead, 15-2, a minute later.

Still down by 13, 21-8, Kara Poirier (So., Eau Claire, Wis.) hit a jumper to ignite a 10-point Piper run. At 8:51, the Pipers trailed, 21-18.

The Falcons bounced back quickly, however, and were once again ahead by 10, 33-23, just four minutes later.

Hamline trailed by 14, 39-25, at the half.

The Pipers tallied the opening 10 points of the second half, including two baskets apiece from Nikki Klinck (Sr., Hibbing, Minn.) and Mary Wilkowski (Sr., Savannah, Ga.). However, as before, the Falcons rebounded and regained a double-digit lead at 12:34, 47-37.

River Falls never looked back from there, ultimately winning the game by 15, 67-52.

Wilkowski tallied 24 points and seven rebounds to lead the Pipers. Klinck and Poirier added 12 points apiece.

The Pipers fall to 1-7 overall with the non-conference loss. The Falcons are now 7-3. Hamline next plays on Monday, January 3, at 7:30 p.m., hosting Gustavus Adolphus.
