From the Martin Luther Website: Falcons Top Knights 99-78

Posted by Falcons Fan on November 29, 2010

RIVER FALLS, Wis. – The MLC women’s basketball team was unable to handle UW-River Falls on the glass in a 99-78 loss Monday night.

Falcons Top Knights 99-78 Sarah Free had 20 points in MLC’s loss at UW-River Falls

The Falcons outrebounded MLC 49-24 for the game, including a 23-3 rebound margin on the offensive glass. The offensive rebounds helped River Falls shoot 47.3 percent for the game, compared to MLC’s 50 percent, and also got the Falcons to the free throw line 35 times, where they went 25-35.

River Falls took control of the game in the first half after MLC kept things tight at the beginning, breaking open a 15-15 game with 13:19 to play in the half with a 22-5 run to take a 17-point lead with 6:57 remaining before the half. The Falcons continued to push the lead the rest of the half, with the MLC deficit reaching as high as 26 points at 57-31 before the half ended with the Falcons leading 59-36.

The second half proved more of the same for both teams, as River Falls pushed the lead as high as 30 points, and never allowed MLC to cut the deficit below 20 on the way to the 21- point win.

Sarah Free led four MLC players in double figures with a season-high 20 points on 6-9 shooting from the field, while Erica Babinec added 18 points. Emily Boldt and Amanda Burk added 12 and 11 points, respectively.

MLC was efficient shooting on the nights, going 26-52 from the floor, 6-11 from beyond the three-point line, and 20-26 from the free throw line, but committed 24 turnovers in the game, and weren’t able to get enough stops on the other end.

With the loss, MLC dropped to 1-4 on the season, while the Falcons improved to 4-1.

The Knights will return to action on Saturday, December 4, when they travel to Mayville State. The game is scheduled to start at 3 p.m., and will be followed by the men’s game.

UWRF Women’s Basketball Routs Martin Luther 99-78

The Falcons used a dominating performance on the boards to easily handle the Knights of Martin Luther College.  The Falcons were only one point away from triple digits, with the final score being 99-78.

Five different Falcons scored in double digits, with Alise Holst (Plainview, MN, Plainview-Elgin-Millville) leading the way with 18.  She was close to a double-double, as she pulled down a tough seven rebounds.  She also lead all players with seven assists.

Maranda Dohrn (Lake City, MN, Lake City) finished with her second double-double of the year, pulling down 11 rebounds to lead all players, while adding 13 points of her own.

Taylor House (Maple Grove, MN, Maple Grove) and Brittany Gregorich (Altoona, Altoona) added 12 points apiece, tying a season high for House and garnering a new season high for Gregorich.

Holst lead the Falcon takeaways with five steals. Brittany Gregorich also had four of the Falcons 17 steals, which is a career high.

Tiffany Gregorich (Altoona, Altoona) rounded out the double-digit scoring with 11.

Sarah Free lead the Knights with 20 points on the night.  Johannah Crass lead the Knights in rebounding with seven.  Erica Babinec was a perfect 8-8 from the free throw line for MLC.

Both teams committed many fouls. The Falcons finished 25-35 from the free throw line, while the Knights were 20-26.

The Falcons dominated the glass, out-rebounding the Knights 49-24.  But it was the offensive rebounding where the Falcons truly shined as they grabbed 23 while holding Martin Luther to a mere three.  This created many second and even third opportunities that lead to a dominating game from inside for the Falcons.

After being knotted up at 11 four minutes into the game, the closest the Knights ever came was with 15:33 to go in the first half with the score all tied up at 15.  After that, it was all UWRF as they went into halftime with a 59-36 advantage.

The Falcons finished 20-38 from field goal range in the first half for 52.6%.  The Knights meanwhile shot 11-26 for 42.3%.

The Falcons benefited from a deep bench, with 38 points coming from nonstarters.  The Knights bench scored 11.

Both teams were plagued by turnovers with Knights committing 24 compared to the Falcons 21.

The Falcons lead by as many as 30 with 7:00 to go in the game.

The only category where the Knights outdid the Falcons was in field goal percentage.  The Knights finished the game shooting 76.9%, making 20 out of 26 shots. The Falcons ended the game shooting 71.4% from field goal range, finishing 25-35.

The Knights fall to 1-4 on the season while the Falcons improve to 4-1.  They are currently on a four game winning streak after falling in the season opener to Gustavus.

Up next for the Falcons is the WIAC opener against UW-Superior. Tip-off is at 7 p.m. in the Karges Center. The Falcons lead the all time series against Superior, 50-18.
