Q & A with UW River Falls Falcon Senior #24 Jenna Hanson

As we say goodbye to Senior Jenna Hanson we thought you might want to know her a little better.

Jenna Hanson , 5-6, averaged 4.5 points and 2.9 rebounds a game. She had 45 assists, 30 steals and three blocked shots. She shot 39-113 (.345) from the field, including 6-27 (.222) from three point range. She was 15-25 (.600) from the line. Hanson, was a two year team caption and was well known for her tough defense. Jenna was a three year starter.

Q & A with UW River Falls Falcon Senior #33 Kelli Hilt

As we say goodbye to Senior Kelli Hilt we thought you might want to know her a bit better.

Kelli Hilt, 5-6, averaged 6.1 points and 2.7 rebounds a game. She had 38 assists, 41 steals and a blocked shot. She shot 53-134 (.396) from the field, including 5-31 (.161) from three point range. She was 42-63 (.667) from the line. Hilt, who was named to the 2009 All-Sportsmanship team, scored in double digits three times. She twice scored 11 points in a game and had a season-high six rebounds in the team’s game  aginast Stout on Jan. 6.

More on Gregorich, Dohrn, Hilt Named to All-WIAC

Guards Tiffany Gregorich (So., Altoona, Wis.) and Kelli Hilt (Sr., Lakeville, Minn. North HS) and forward Maranda Dohrn (So., Lake City, Minn.) have all been named to 2010 All-WIAC teams.

. Dohrn earned honorable mention and Hilt was named to the All-Sportsmanship team.

Gregorich, 5-5, led the Falcons in scoring averaging 13.8 points a game. She also led the Falcons in assists (56) and was second in steals (47). She shot 110-228 (.482) from the field, including 33-87 (.379) from three point range. She finished 65-81 (.802) from the line. Gregorich, who earned honorable mention to the 2009 All-WIAC team, scored a career-high 30 points in the team’s game against Eau Claire on Feb. 3. She also had a career-high eight rebounds in the team’s game against Washington & Jefferson on Dec. 29. She scored in double figures in 16 games. Gregorich was named the team’s Player of the Week four times and was named the WIAC Player of the Week on Dec. 8.


Dohrn, 6-0, averaged seven points and 7.1 rebounds a game for the Falcons. She led the Falcons in rebounding and blocked shots (20). She also had 13 assists and 19 steals. She shot 68-144 (.472) from the field, including 1-5 (.200) from behind the arc. She was 37-59 (.627) at the line. Her best game of the year was against Platteville on Feb. 23 when she scored a career-high 23 points and grabbed a career-high 22 rebounds. The 22 rebounds tied the school record. Dohrn was named the team’s Player of the week twice and was named the WIAC Player of the Week on Feb. 23.

Hilt, 5-6, averaged 6.1 points and 2.7 rebounds a game. She had 38 assists, 41 steals and a blocked shot. She shot 53-134 (.396) from the field, including 5-31 (.161) from three point range. She was 42-63 (.667) from the line. Hilt, who was named to the 2009 All-Sportsmanship team, scored in double digits three times. The WIAC’s All-Sportsmanship team is for individuals that displayed exemplary sportsmanship throughout the season. The team included one member from each school as selected by that school.

UW-Stout’s Hirssig Tops All-WIAC Women’s Basketball Selections; UW-Whitewater’s Carollo Named Coach of the Year

MADISON, Wis.–University of Wisconsin-Stout’s Julia Hirssig was voted the Player of the Year to top the 10 individuals that were voted to the 2009-10 All-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Women’s Basketball Team by the league coaches, while UW-Whitewater head coach Keri Carollo was chosen the Coach of the Year.

Hirssig is one of four Blue Devils who have combined to win a total of five conference player of the year plaques.  She leads the WIAC with 21.4 points per game and a .682 field goal percentage, while ranking second with 10.6 rebounds per contest and ninth with 1.74 steals per game.  The .682 field goal percentage (217-of-318) leads the NCAA Division III, while her 579 points established a school single-season record.

Hirssig, who claimed first team honors for the third straight year, started all 27 games and reached double-figures in scoring in 26 contests.  She scored 20-plus points in 20 games, including a career-high tying 37 points at UW-Oshkosh on Jan. 16.  Hirssig tied for the league lead with 14 double-doubles, including nine in the last 12 games.  She grabbed 18 rebounds in back-to-back contests against UW-River Falls on Jan. 23 and UW-La Crosse on Jan. 27.

Her career totals included:  110 games played (including 81 straight starting assignments), 997 rebounds and school-records of 1,738 points, 416 free throws made, 675 free throws attempted and a .619 field goal percentage.  Hirssig’s career field goal percentage and free throws attempted lead the WIAC all-time chart, while her free throws made are third and points are fifth.

Repeat choices on the first team included:  UW-Stevens Point’s Britta Petersen (2009) and UW-Whitewater’s Kelsey Hendrickson (2008, 2009).

Named to the All-Defensive Team were:  UW-La Crosse’s Danielle Frank, UW-River Falls’ Tiffany Gregorich, UW-Stevens Point’s Andrea Flease, UW-Stout’s Julia Hirssig and UW-Whitewater’s Kelsey Hendrickson.  Hirssig received the honor for the third straight year.

Carollo claimed the coaching honor after directing the Warhawks to their second WIAC championship in the last three seasons and fifth in team history.   She is in her eighth year at UW-Whitewater and owns a career mark of 137-80.

An All-Sportsmanship Team was chosen for individuals that displayed exemplary sportsmanship throughout the season.  It included one member from each school.

A Falcon’s Eye View of the Top Ten Stories From the 2009-2010 UW River Falls Falcon Women’s Basketball Season.

Here are the top ten stories from the 2009-2010 season. The UW River Falls Falcon women’s basketball team went 18-7 on the year and tied for 3rd in the WIAC. It was an exciting year with many great stories. Here are the top ten from the Falcon’s Eye View.

10-California Dreamin’. Holiday trip to Sunny California between Christmas and News Years. Team went 2-0 and visited Hollywood, the beaches, Disneyland and many other places.

9-Win over the Presidents of Washington Jefferson at the Surf City Classic in California.  The Presidents ended the year ranked #18 with a 22-3 record. The Falcons came from behind in the final minutes to claim a 63-59 win.

W&J then went on a 10-2 run win five minutes to go in the game to take a 52-44 lead.

But the Falcons scored the next four points to get back in the game. Three of the points came on a three-pointer by Tiffany Gregorich and the Falcons trailed, 54-50. After Smith hit a jumper to give her team a six point, 54-48, lead with 2:52 to go, the Falcons put on the pressure to get back in the game. UWRF scored the next five points to get within one, 54-53, with 2:06 to go. With 1:32 to play Tiffany Gregorich tied the game, 56-56, when she scored on a layup, was fouled, and made the free throw.

After W&J hit a free throw, the Falcons scored four points to take a 60-57 lead. Kelli Hilt and Tiffany Gregorich both scored on layups to give the Falcons the lead with 46 seconds to play. But W&J’s Alyssa Oursler hit a jumper with 31 seconds to play to pull her team to within one, 60-59. With 23 seconds to play Tiffany Gregorich was fouled and she made both free throws to put UWRF ahead, 62-59. The Falcon defense held and with just eight seconds to go Brittany Gregorich was fouled and she made one of two free throws to seal the victory.

Tiffany Gregorich led the Falcons with 21 points and eight rebounds. She also had three steals and two assists. Holst added 13 points and four rebounds. Tess Lardie added nine points and four rebounds. Taylor House finished with a team-high 11 rebounds and she scored seven points. House finished with six offensive rebounds.

8-Maranda Dohrn Scores 23, Rebounds 22. The Falcons whipped Platteville 57-46, but the story was about Maranda’s “Monster game”. Dohrn scored a career-high 23 points, shooting 11-15 from the field, and ripped down a career-high 22 rebounds on the night, tying the single-game record for rebounds. She also recorded one block and had only two personal fouls in the game.

This was the final WIAC game of the season. The Falcons tied for 3rd place in the WIAC.

7-Tiffany Gregorich hit the winning bucket with just a second to go. The Falcons managed to swing a last-minute victory over Macalester College, 68-67.

Leading the front for the Falcons was Tiffany Gregorich, who finished with 19 points, two steals and three rebounds. She shot 7-8 from the field (.875). She hit the winning bucket with just one second to play.

With 1:26 to play and the Falcons trailing by 64-61, Brittany Gregorich hit two free throws to make it a one point game. With 46 seconds to go Gregorich hit a bucket to gave the Falcons a 65-64 lead. But then MC’s Jessica Rene hit a basket to give her team a one point lead with 27 seconds to play. With 15 seconds to play Tiffany Gregorich was fouled and made one of two free throws to tie the game. With just seven seconds to play MC’s Danielle Johnson was fouled. She made the first free throw, but missed the second and the Scots led, 67-66. That’s when Tiffany Gregorich hit the winning bucket with just a second to go.

6-Falcon’s 64-48 blasting over first place UW-Whitewater. The win over UWW  lifted the Falcons into second place in the WIAC standings. UWRF is just a half game behind first place UW-Stevens Point with three games to play. Dohrn finished 7-9 from the floor and 4-4 from the line to lead UWRF. Brittany Gregorich added 14 points to aid the Falcon cause. The 14 points ties her career high. Taylor House led the Falcons with nine rebounds.

The Falcons played tenacious defense the entire game and limited UWW to just 19-55 (.345) shooting from the field. UWW put on full court pressure for most the game and forced 17 Falcon turnovers. But UWRF forced 16 UWW turnovers with eight coming in each half. The Falcons dominated the boards with a 44-31 advantage. UWRF pulled down 14 offensive rebounds led by House with four.

5-Tiffany Gregorich Scores Career High 30 points as Falcons rocket the Blugolds, 83-62. Gregorich had 20 of her 30 points at the end of the first half. She shot 10-12 from the field and 4-5 from the free throw line. In addition, Gregorich went 6-8 from the behind the arc, putting her in possession of the third most three pointers made in a single in UWRF women’s basketball history. She also had five rebounds and three steals.

In addition to Tiffany’s performance, Brittany Gregorich chipped in 10 points, seven boards and a block. Katie Theisen had nine points, and Kelli Hilt and Tess Lardie each recorded seven points of their own. Maranda Dohrn managed to rip down seven rebounds as well. Nikki Guhr tied with Tiffany to lead all players with three steals.

As a team, UWRF shot 31-53 (.585) from the field, 9-17 (.529) from the three-point line and 12-16 (.750) from the free throw line.

The victory puts the Falcons at 16-4 overall, 8-4 in the WIAC. They are one game out of first place (behind Stevens Point) and a half-game out of second (behind Whitewater).

4-Falcons Top Stout in OT to Remain Unbeaten at 13-0. River Falls remains undefeated as they beat UW-Stout in a thrilling overtime game, 68-65, on Wednesday night at the Karges Center.

The Falcons moved to 13-0 on the season and remained perfect in conference play moving their impressive record to 5-0. The Falcons entered the game ranked 13th in the D3hoops.com top 25 poll. UW-Stout entered the contest with a record of 7-5 and was 3-1 in the WIAC play.

The Falcons were lead by a cast of players as well. Hilt scored 10 points in this contest. Lardie scored 12 points and added six rebounds.  Maranda Dohrn had a wonderful performance earning a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds. Tiffany and Brittany Gregorich added nine and eight points respectively.

3-Falcons smash  No. 15 UWSP, Remain Undefeated. Ranked No. 15 in the nation, UW-Stevens Point visited the Karges Center to take on the 5-0 Falcons. The Gregorich sisters teamed up for 33 points in the Falcons 72-61 victory over the Pointers.

Tiffany Gregorich finished the night with 19 points, and Brittany Gregorich chipped in 14 points of her own. Tiffany scored 13 points in the second half, and Brittany had nine second-half points of her own. In addition, Tiffany shot 7-13 from the field, 1-3 from the three-point line and 4-4 from the free throw line. She also had a team-high three steals. 1- So many UW River Falls Falcon women’s basketball records during Record year – Falcons 18-7 overall record is the best winning percentage (72%) since the 1988-1989 season.

The 18 wins are the most since 1988-1989 season, matching the 2000-2001 team with 18 wins.
