Falcons Lose WIAC Game at UWSP

Posted by Falcons Fan on February 14, 2010

Feb. 13, 2010

The Falcon women’s basketball team lost a 70-46 decision at UW-Stevens Point on Saturday afternoon.

The game featured two of the three teams that were tied for first place in the WIAC going into Saturday’s action. UWSP controlled most of the game to take the win and will at worst stay tied for the league lead with two games to play. Whitewater is the other team that entered Saturday’s play tied for first place.

The loss dropped the Falcons to 17-5 overall and 9-5 in WIAC play. UWSP improved to 18-5 and 10-4 in the WIAC.

UWSP’s biggest second half lead was 28 points, 58-30, with 9:25 to play. The Falcons made a run after that outscoring UWSP 11-0 to make it a 58-41 game. Nikki Guhr scored five of the 11 points in the run. But the Falcons could not keep the run going and UWSP held on for the win.

Brittany Gregorich led the Falcons with 14 points. Guhr came off the bench to score 12 points. She was 2-2 from behind the arc. Alise Holst scored nine points and Maranda Dohrn led the team with seven rebounds. The Falcons shot just 12-42 from the field, including 2-11 from behind the arc. The Falcons finished 20-27 at the line.

UWSP was led by Britta Petersen who scored 17 points and Andrea Flease who scored 14. UWSP was 26-63 from the field, including 4-12 from behind the arc. UWSP was 14-19 at the line. UWSP held a 42-31 advantage in rebounds.

UWSP, ranked No. 20 in the D3hoops.com poll, jumped out to an 8-4 lead in the first half and then went on a 6-0 run to take a 14-4 lead with 14:30 left to play. After a Gregorich basket with 14:09 to go, UWSP went on a 10-2 run to take a 24-8 lead with 11:46 to play. The Pointers kept the pressure on and took a 22 point, 33-11, lead with 5:31 to play when Josi Schultz hit a jumper. Gregorich hit a jumper, Guhr hit a three and Kelli Hilt hit two free throws to make it a 33-18 game with 2:22 to play in the half. Gregorich added two more free throws with 1:43 to go to cut the UWSP lead to 35-20. But the Pointers scored the final four points of the half to take a 39-20 lead into the halftime.

Gregorich led the Falcons with 10 first half points. The Falcons shot just 5-20 in the first half from the field, including 1-6 from behind the arc. UWRF turned the ball over 14 times compared to seven by the Pointers. UWSP shot 16-34 form the field in the first half and had a 21-16 advantage in rebounds.

The Falcons will next play at UW-La Crosse on Wednesday with action starting at 7 p.m.

Theisen is Key Player Off Falcon Bench

In order for a machine to operate effectively and efficiently, it needs every piece to do its part. Senior and one of the leaders of the UW-River Falls women’s basketball team, Katie Theisen, is an integral piece of a team that is currently tied for first place in the WIAC standings.

“Katie has been a very important role player for our team. She’s a tremendous shooter and can make things happen on defense. I haven’t seen a shooter with the quickness and accuracy that Katie demonstrates,” said Falcon women’s basketball Coach Cindy Holbrook.

Holbrook has led the team through the season. “I think my head coach is smart and knows the game well. We are always prepared for games, which is appreciated by all of us,” Theisen expressed.

Theisen, who has the third highest three-point shooting percentage and second most three-point-shots made on the team, comes off the bench and plays shooting guard for the Falcons.
“I enjoy mostly everything about basketball, mostly shooting threes,” Theisen said.

The women’s team holds a record of 17-4, with only two losses on its home court.

“I think this year’s team is special because it’s not very often you can start 13-0 in a season. And even though we have a few losses thus far, I think we are playing extraordinary as a team,” Theisen, a senior from Andover, Minn., explained.

This year Theisen has averaged 3.2 points per game and has been a key contributor in the three-point game.

She started playing basketball back in second grade. “Everyone else in my family played hockey.” But, Theisen said she enjoyed basketball instead. In high school, she also played golf and softball, but always stood out in basketball.

“In high school, my greatest accomplishment was making it to the high school state tournament,” Theisen said.

Theisen expects to graduate this spring and begin her career. She is majoring in sociology. “I would like to be a probation officer,” Theisen said.

The Falcon season continues on Saturday at Stevens Point, Feb. 17 at La Crosse and Feb. 20 at Platteville. The team, including Theisen, is looking to compete in the WIAC tournament in late February.

Women’s college basketball: Altoona natives help UW-River Falls exceed expectations

The UW-River Falls women’s basketball team is building something here.

It’s not taking very long either.

Essentially the same group of youngsters who took their lumps last season has the Falcons fighting for their best finish in more than two decades

“We just have a pretty well-balanced team,” UW-River Falls coach Cindy Holbrook said. “I expected a lot out of us this year.”

By anyone’s standards, she’s getting it. Thanks in part to a group of former Altoona standouts, the Falcons (17-4, 9-4) are second in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, trailing preseason favorite UW-Stevens Point by a half-game with two weeks to play.

If the Falcons can hold steady, they will earn their best finish since winning back-to-back WIAC championships in 1987-’88 and 1988-’89. They have placed third three times since winning those titles but not higher.

“We have a lot of athletic girls,” sophomore guard Tiffany Gregorich said. “I think our main thing is defense.”

Gregorich, who was one of the area’s best prep players before graduating from Altoona, has been a centerpiece since stepping onto campus. She led the Falcons in scoring as a freshman and received honorable mention all-WIAC. Her 15.5 points per game this season are third-best in the league and lead a team that returns every player who started a game last year.

She has been partially supported by five freshmen, including her younger sister, Brittany. The 5-foot-9 forward is third on the team in scoring (7.7 ppg) and second in rebounding (4.7 rpg). The Gregoriches’ contributions emphasize the promise of a team that has but five upperclassmen on the roster.

“It’s a fun year,” Tiffany Gregorich said. “Yeah, we’re young, but we can also learn.”

The Falcons, who were picked to finish sixth by the conference’s sports information directors after finishing last year in that position, have stood at or near the top all season. They won their first 13 games and were ranked nationally by both d3hoops.com and the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association until losing four of five games during a January hiccup. They still were receiving votes in both polls.

“Our sophomores have been really up and down,” said Holbrook, who took over in 2000 and has the second-most wins in program history. “They’ve been unpredictable. There’s no question about it. But we have a good basketball team.”

The victories are coming again now. The Falcons have won three consecutive games, including a rare victory at UW-Eau Claire’s Zorn Arena on Wednesday and a 64-48 statement victory over UW-Whitewater last weekend. They travel to leader UW-Stevens Point for a critical game at 3 p.m. Saturday. The Falcons beat the Pointers at home in December.

“During January, we just kind of dropped our defense a lot,” Tiffany Gregorich said. “We practice on it all the time now. Hopefully, that keeps going.”

Instead of fighting just to gain entrance to the six-team WIAC tournament at the end of this month, the Falcons are contending for one of two first-round byes. They have never played in the championship game of the conference tournament, dating back to 1999.

Perhaps the most telling indicator of the Falcons’ progress is their reluctancy to focus on anything but the present. The longer the Falcons keep playing this season, the better the chance that senior guard Jenna Hanson can return from an injury and finish her collegiate career on the court.

“If we keep going, then she can come back and play for us still,” said Tiffany Gregorich, a friend of Hanson’s dating back to their time at Altoona. “It’d be nice to do it for our seniors because they’ve been here for four years.”

Soon enough, even the youngest Falcons will be on the other end of that sentiment. But not too soon.

“We’ve got a bright future,” Holbrook said. “There’s no question about it. We’ve got a lot to look forward to.”

One of the greatest halftime shots ever

Posted by Falcons Fan on February 7, 2010

At halftime the Falcons select three people to shoot a layup, free throw , three pointer and then selects one person who gets to shot from half court.

For a made free throw you get a burrito, a free throw two burritos, a three pointer- three burritos.  For the half court shot you get like 250 burritos(I think), as you can imagine this is a big deal for a big eater.

You need to see this guy, I think is name is Jon.

View Jon for a layup and free throw

Jon missed his free throw so no three pointer was taken.

As luck would have it for Jon this night he was selected for the 250 free Burrito half court shot. Many people could tell he was hungry.

View Jon’s half court shot here-Amazing

My camera stoped in mid flight, I was quickly able to restart my camera after a few seconds.

View the fan reaction to Jon’s shot- WOW Jon has a lot a friends when you have 250 free burritos. Even the mens team stormed the court for Jon.

Jon was a celebity at the post game Birthday party for Tiffany where all the players, parents and Falcon fans attended.

What Whitewater had to say- Falcons Fly Past Warhawks

Posted by Falcons Fan on February 7, 2010

From the Whitewater website.

Just one more reason to dislike that four+ hour bus ride to River Falls.  UW-Whitewater traveled north to UW-River Falls Saturday and caught (a) cold, falling to to the Falcons 64-48.

River Falls held a 26-22 lead at halftime.  Neither team seemed to be able to score, Whitewater going 1-9 from the arc and River Falls 0-5.  And neither team got to the line to move the scoreboard, Whitewater 1-2 and River Falls 2-3.  The first half scoring centered (pun intended) on Whitewater’s Cortney Kumerow, 5-6 from the field for 10 points with five rebounds, and the Falcons’ Maranda Dohrn, 5-6 and 2-2 from the line for 12 points with five rebounds.

UW-W pushed in front 35-34 at 14:07, but the Falcons answered with a 14-3 run to take a 48-37 lead and it was a double digit lead the rest of the way.  Whitewater was within ten at 50-40 at 6:58 on a Nicole Bundy three, but UW-RF eventually built a nineteen point lead, 64-45 with 0:37 left as UW-W was forced to shoot threes to catch up.

The Warhawks shot 16% from three point range (3-19), their lowest percentage from beyond the arc this season.  The three 3′s made ties for a season low, and the result, 48 points, is also a season low.

Bundy led the Warhawks with 15 points, making all three of Whitewater’s three point shots.  Kumerow ended up with ten points and a team high seven rebounds.  Bundy was the game leader with five steals and Heidi Sonntag dished out three assists.  Dohrn led UW-RF with 18 points, with freshman guard Brittany Gregorich adding 14.  Taylor House led the Falcons with nine rebounds and Tiffany Gregorich passed for five assists.

UW-W is 15-6 overall and 8-4 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.  UW-RF is 17-4 and 9-4 in league play.

Dohrn Scores Career High 18 Points to Help Falcons to 64-48 Win Over UWW

Posted by Falcons Fan on February 7, 2010

Feb. 6, 2010

Maranda Dohrn scored a career-high 18 points to help the Falcon women’s basketball team to a 64-48 win over UW-Whitewater on Saturday at the Karges Center.

The win over UWW lifted the Falcons into second place in the WIAC standings. UWRF is just a half game behind first place UW-Stevens Point with three games to play.

Dohrn finished 7-9 from the floor and 4-4 from the line to lead UWRF. Brittany Gregorich added 14 points to aid the Falcon cause. The 14 points ties her career high. Taylor House led the Falcons with nine rebounds.

The score was tied just once in the second half and UWW led just once. With 14:58 to play UWW held a 35-33 lead. But the Falcons went on an 8-0 run to take a 41-35 lead with 11:53 to go. House hit a layup to give the Falcons the advantage. The Falcon lead hit double figures with 7:36 to go when Brittany Gregorich hit a three pointer to give the Falcons a 48-37 lead. The Falcons kept the pressure on and had their biggest lead, 19 points (64-45), with 37 seconds to play.

The Falcons held a 26-22 lead at the half. UWW led for the first five minutes of the half. Tiffany Gregorich hit a layup wih 15:32 to go to give UWRF its first lead, 8-7. UWW took a 14-12 lead with 8:47 to go when Kelly Beese hit 1-2 free throws. But the Falcons outscored UWW, 10-2, over the next three minutes to take a six-point, 22-16 lead.

The Falcons played tenacious defense the entire game and limited UWW to just 19-55 (.345) shooting from the field. UWW put on full court pressure for most the game and forced 17 Falcon turnovers. But UWRF forced 16 UWW turnovers with eight coming in each half. The Falcons dominated the boards with a 44-31 advantage. UWRF pulled down 14 offensive rebounds led by House with four.

UWW was led by Nicole Bundy who scored 15 points. Cortney Kumerow scored 10 points and led the Warhawks with seven rebounds.

The victory puts the Falcons at 17-4 overall and 9-4 in the WIAC. UWRF will next play at Stevens Point on Feb. 13 with action starting at 3 p.m. First place in the WIAC will be on the line.
