STEVENS POINT — Saturday was a special day for Ashley Windt as the lone senior on the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point women’s basketball team.
Britta Petersen and Andrea Flease made sure Senior Day was not only special for Windt, but the rest of the Pointers too.
Petersen scored a game-high 17 points and Flease added 14 as No. 20-ranked UW-Stevens Point whipped UW-River Falls 70-46 at the Berg Gym to end a two-game losing streak.
With the victory, the Pointers knocked UW-River Falls out of a first-place tie in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, while improving to 10-4 in the league.
“This was a gut-check game for us to see what we’re made of,” UW-Stevens Point coach Shirley Egner. “We got off to a great start and that is what we’ve been lacking.”
Windt set the tone for the day on the Pointers second possession.
After missing a 3-pointer from the left wing, the Hurley native raced across the court to grab her own rebound. Windt then sent a laser pass to a wide open Petersen for a layup.
The Pointers were off and running after that, building an early 18-8 lead and then going on a 17-5 run to move on top 35-13 just before halftime.
“Playing defense and rebounding, that’s the difference. It’s just a matter of the kids being focused,” said Egner. “And unfortunately, they weren’t at full strength.”
Capitalizing on a distinct size advantage, Petersen scored 10 of her points in the opening half predominantly in the paint.
Meanhwile, the Pointers turned up the intensity on the defensive end of the floor after coming off consecutive games of surrendering 80 or more points.
The Falcons were forced into 23 turnovers and had attempted just 24 shots from the field with 10 minutes left in the game.
In comparison, UWSP had made 21 shots at the same point, while dominating the glass to the tune of 42-31 behind a game-high eight boards from Ashley Averkamp.
“We were better in our stance and getting in the gaps. You have to play defense and rebound,” Egner said. “I thought we showed a lot of character, heart and courage to bounce back like we did today.
