Jan. 9, 2009

The Falcon women’s basketball team lost at UW-Whitewater, 76-62, on Saturday night to snap the team’s winning streak at 13 games.

The Falcons would keep it close with Whitewater for the beginning of the first half. Whitewater would go on a run with about nine minutes to go in the half. Heidi Sonntag hit a jumper to put the Warhawks up, 22-16, and after that Chantel Burg hit a jump shot and followed that up adding two free throws. The Warhawks would continue to pull away from the Falcons until Taylor House hit two free throws to pull UWRF to within 12 points.

The second half would not go much differently than the first. The two teams traded baskets until the Warhawks again went on another run. The Falcons were down 11 points when the Warhawks Kelsey Henderson knocked down a three-point shot. The trey was followed by a couple of layups before the Falcons would score again.

House would be the main source of points in the later part of the game on her way to 21 points on the night. With 5:34 left in the second half and the Falcons behind by 13, House gave the Falcons a glimmer of hope beginning with a layup. Following that House would add three consecutive free throws. She would score two more driving shots in the game, the later of the two with 1:47 remaining, but the Falcons trailing by 13 still.

The Warhawks proved to be too much for the Falcons on this night. The Falcons shot just 39 percent from the field in this game, and were a disappointing 0-7 from beyond the arc. Twenty-four turnovers plagued the Falcon offense. Whitewater would shoot a whopping 40 free throws throughout the course of the game.

House was the main source of offense for the Falcons. She led the team with 21 points and also added five rebounds and a steal; House shot 8-9 from the field in the game. Tiffany Gregorich added 14 points, three rebounds and an assist in the contest.

Defensively the Falcons played a good game. With eight steals in the game and 31 total rebounds the Falcons were very close statistically with the Warhawk defensive numbers. Brittany Gregorich led the Falcons squad with seven rebounds on the night.

The Falcons were ranked No. 13 in the D3hoops.com poll, while the Warhawks were ranked No. 19. The Falcons are 5-1 in WIAC play now, a half game ahead of the 4-1 Warhawks. The Falcons set a school record with 13 straight wins before Saturday’s loss at UWW.

The Falcons will take their 13-1 overall record back to the Karges Center when they host UW-La Crosse at 7 p.m., on Wednesday.

Falcons Top Stout in OT to Remain Unbeaten

Jan. 6, 2009

River Falls remains undefeated as they beat UW-Stout in a thrilling overtime game, 68-65, on Wednesday night at the Karges Center.

The Falcons moved to 13-0 on the season and remained perfect in conference play moving their impressive record to 5-0. The Falcons entered the game ranked 13th in the D3hoops.com top 25 poll. UW-Stout entered the contest with a record of 7-5 and was 3-1 in the WIAC play.

The Falcons and the Blue Devils traded leads early and often in the first half. The Falcons attempted to take a lead and run away with the game, but the Stout team would not allow that to happen. The Falcons would enter the locker rooms with a lead of 25-23.
The second half went much like the first with lead changes and the score very close. With about eight minutes left in the second half the Falcons took their largest lead of the evening, 48,39 when Alise Holst hit two free throws.

With 6:30 to play Falcon Tess Lardie hit two free throws to give the Falcons another nine point, 50-41, lead.

But then Stout got back in the game by going on a 7-2 run to draw within 52-50 with 4:28 to go when Julia Hirssig hit two free throws. With 2:02 to play and with the Falcons leading, 56-54, Stout’s Megan Maslowski hit a three to give her team a one-point lead.

With 1:41 to go Lardie hit 1-2 free throws to tie the game, 57-57. With 1:16 to play UWS’s Danielle DeWitt hit a jumper to give her team a 59-57 lead.

With just 16 seconds to play UWRF’s Tiffany Gregorich hit two free throws to tie the game and that’s how regulation ended.

Lardie started the overtime by scoring the first two baskets for the Falcons. River Falls would hold that lead through the overtime period. The Blue Devils would keep it close with Maslowski adding two of her 12 points with nine seconds left to come within one point. Kelli Hilt would put in two free throws, part of her 10 points and six rebounds, to give UWRF a three-point lead that would prove to be the final score.

The Falcons had trouble defending three of the Blue Devil players on Wednesday night. Hirssig, Maslowski, and DeWitt combined for 42 points for the Blue Devils.

The Falcons were lead by a cast of players as well. Hilt scored 10 points in this contest. Lardie scored 12 points and added six rebounds.  Maranda Dohrn had a wonderful performance earning a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds. Tiffany and Brittany Gregorich added nine and eight points respectively.

The Falcons will take their impressive record to Whitewater on Saturday; they will play at 5 p.m. UWW is ranked No. 19 in the D3Hoops.com poll and enter the game with a 10-3 overall record. They are just a game behind the Falcons in the WIAC standings with a 3-1 record.
