Falcons Top Stout in OT to Remain UnbeatenJan. 6, 2009 River Falls remains undefeated as they beat UW-Stout in a thrilling overtime game, 68-65, on Wednesday night at the Karges Center. The Falcons moved to 13-0 on the season and remained perfect in conference play moving their impressive record to 5-0. The Falcons entered the game ranked 13th in the D3hoops.com top 25 poll. UW-Stout entered the contest with a record of 7-5 and was 3-1 in the WIAC play. The Falcons and the Blue Devils traded leads early and often in the first half. The Falcons attempted to take a lead and run away with the game, but the Stout team would not allow that to happen. The Falcons would enter the locker rooms with a lead of 25-23. With 6:30 to play Falcon Tess Lardie hit two free throws to give the Falcons another nine point, 50-41, lead. But then Stout got back in the game by going on a 7-2 run to draw within 52-50 with 4:28 to go when Julia Hirssig hit two free throws. With 2:02 to play and with the Falcons leading, 56-54, Stout’s Megan Maslowski hit a three to give her team a one-point lead. With 1:41 to go Lardie hit 1-2 free throws to tie the game, 57-57. With 1:16 to play UWS’s Danielle DeWitt hit a jumper to give her team a 59-57 lead. With just 16 seconds to play UWRF’s Tiffany Gregorich hit two free throws to tie the game and that’s how regulation ended. Lardie started the overtime by scoring the first two baskets for the Falcons. River Falls would hold that lead through the overtime period. The Blue Devils would keep it close with Maslowski adding two of her 12 points with nine seconds left to come within one point. Kelli Hilt would put in two free throws, part of her 10 points and six rebounds, to give UWRF a three-point lead that would prove to be the final score. The Falcons had trouble defending three of the Blue Devil players on Wednesday night. Hirssig, Maslowski, and DeWitt combined for 42 points for the Blue Devils. The Falcons were lead by a cast of players as well. Hilt scored 10 points in this contest. Lardie scored 12 points and added six rebounds. Maranda Dohrn had a wonderful performance earning a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds. Tiffany and Brittany Gregorich added nine and eight points respectively. The Falcons will take their impressive record to Whitewater on Saturday; they will play at 5 p.m. UWW is ranked No. 19 in the D3Hoops.com poll and enter the game with a 10-3 overall record. They are just a game behind the Falcons in the WIAC standings with a 3-1 record. |
