After leading by as many as 13, the Falcons fell to the UW-Superior Yellowjackets on Wednesay night at the Karges Center, regardless of a 21-point night by Tiffany Gregorich.
The Falcons led by 13 after a Jenna Hanson field goal with 12:10 remaining in the first half. After fouls by Tess Lardie, Alise Holst, Maranda Dohrn and Kelli Hilt within five minutes, UWRF led by only five, 24-19 with 4:57 left in the half. Superior guard Connie Urmanski hit a lay-up at the end of the half. The Falcons led by three to start the second half, 29-26.
With 12:27 left in the second half, Urmanski hit a three-pointer to tie the game at 36. UWRF and UWS battled throughout the rest of the game, neither team leading by more than five.
Superior led by five with 2:42 to play. After a 1-1 appearance at the free throw line by Taylor House, the Falcons pulled within four, 51-47. Later, Gregorich went 1-1 from the charity stripe and was immediately fouled again. On her encore performance at the free throw line, she made both shots, cutting the Yellowjacket lead to one, 51-50.
After a missed free throw by Superior, Gregorich made a lay-up, putting UWRF up by one. Superior made a lay-up, but Gregorich regained a Falcon lead after sinking two more free throws. With 0:15 left in the game, UWRF led 54-53.
Casteele Miller drove the lane and sank the shot for the Yellowjackets with 0:03 remaining. Falcon Head Coach Cindy Holbrook called two timeouts back-to-back to set up a last-second play. Gregorich received the ball at half court and missed the final shot by inches. The final scored showed Superior on top, 55-54.
Gregorich led the Falcons with 21 points and six rebounds. She also led all defenders with three seteals. She shot 6-10 from the field, 1-4 from behind the arc and 8-9 from the free throw line.
House finished with seven points and four rebounds. Brittany Gregorich chipped in nine rebounds, to lead all players.
As a team, the Falcons shot 18-55 (.327) from the field, 2-16 (.125) and 16-24 (.667) from the free throw line. They turned the ball over 21 times and ripped down 41 total rebounds. In addition, UWRF finished the game with 12 steals.
The loss puts the Falcons at 6-4 in the WIAC. The team’s next game is Saturday when the Titans of UW-Oshkosh come to the Karges Center for a 5 p.m. tip-off. Saturday night will also be Parent’s and Senior Night.
