Falcons Pull Out Win Over UW-Oshkosh, 59-50

Posted by Falcons Fan on January 31, 2010

Jan. 30, 2010

Behind the Gregorich sisters, the Falcons were able to pull out a victory over the Titans of UW-Oshkosh Saturday night at the Karges Center. After leading at halftime by only two, UWRF managed to win the game with a final score of 59-50.

The lead waivered back and forth between the two teams for the majority of the first half. Around the 13:37 mark, Oshkosh seemed to run away for a bit, leading by seven after a Megan Wenig three pointer.

When the clock read 6:09, a three pointer by Katie Kitzke put the Titans up by eight. By the time there was 5:45 remaining in the half, Tiffany and Brittany Gregorich fired up, scoring a combined eleven points. Brittany assisted the ball to Tiffany who sunk a three pointer to put the Falcons within five. After a strong defensive stop, Tiffany turned around to assist a Brittany-shot three pointer. Tiffany went on to score another three pointer while Brittany finished on a solid lay up. After Tiffany’s second three, the Falcons had pulled ahead by one, and Brittany’s lay up at 3:40 put UWRF ahead by three.

At the end of the first half, the Falcons were ahead by two, 29-27. UWRF held their lead until 8:15 remained in the second half. Another Kitzke three put the Titans ahead by one. With 5:14 remaining, the game was tied at 42. Ashley Winterfeldt shot two free throws, putting the Titans up by one. They would not see the lead again.

The Falcons went on to win the game by a margin of 10, 59-50.

Tiffany Gregorich led all scorers with 18 points, two steals and seven rebounds. Kelli Hilt chipped in 11 points, and Brittany Gregorich finished with 10 points. Maranda Dohrn pulled down seven boards, and Tess Lardie added two steals. It was Kitzke who led the Titans, finishing with 10 points.

As a team the Falcons shot 20-48 (.417) from the field, 5-10 from the three-point line and 14-20 (.7) from the free throw line. They finished with six steals, 16 turnovers and 36 total rebounds.

The victory puts the Falcons at 7-4 in the WIAC (15-4 overall). Their next game will be Wednesday at UW-Eau Claire, starting at 7 p.m.

After leading by as many as 13, the Falcons fell to the UW-Superior Yellowjackets on Wednesay night at the Karges Center, regardless of a 21-point night by Tiffany Gregorich.

The Falcons led by 13 after a Jenna Hanson field goal with 12:10 remaining in the first half. After fouls by Tess Lardie, Alise Holst, Maranda Dohrn and Kelli Hilt within five minutes, UWRF led by only five, 24-19 with 4:57 left in the half. Superior guard Connie Urmanski hit a lay-up at the end of the half. The Falcons led by three to start the second half, 29-26.

With 12:27 left in the second half, Urmanski hit a three-pointer to tie the game at 36. UWRF and UWS battled throughout the rest of the game, neither team leading by more than five.

Superior led by five with 2:42 to play. After a 1-1 appearance at the free throw line by Taylor House, the Falcons pulled within four, 51-47. Later, Gregorich went 1-1 from the charity stripe and was immediately fouled again. On her encore performance at the free throw line, she made both shots, cutting the Yellowjacket lead to one, 51-50.

After a missed free throw by Superior, Gregorich made a lay-up, putting UWRF up by one. Superior made a lay-up, but Gregorich regained a Falcon lead after sinking two more free throws. With 0:15 left in the game, UWRF led 54-53.

Casteele Miller drove the lane and sank the shot for the Yellowjackets with 0:03 remaining. Falcon Head Coach Cindy Holbrook called two timeouts back-to-back to set up a last-second play. Gregorich received the ball at half court and missed the final shot by inches. The final scored showed Superior on top, 55-54.

Gregorich led the Falcons with 21 points and six rebounds. She also led all defenders with three seteals. She shot 6-10 from the field, 1-4 from behind the arc and 8-9 from the free throw line.

House finished with seven points and four rebounds. Brittany Gregorich chipped in nine rebounds, to lead all players.

As a team, the Falcons shot 18-55 (.327) from the field, 2-16 (.125) and 16-24 (.667) from the free throw line. They turned the ball over 21 times and ripped down 41 total rebounds. In addition, UWRF finished the game with 12 steals.

The loss puts the Falcons at 6-4 in the WIAC. The team’s next game is Saturday when the Titans of UW-Oshkosh come to the Karges Center for a 5 p.m. tip-off. Saturday night will also be Parent’s and Senior Night.

Falcons Drop 80-67 WIAC Game at UW-Stout

Posted by Falcons Fan on January 24, 2010

Jan. 23, 2009

The Falcon women’s basketball team, ranked No. 21 in the nation, fell to UW-Stout in Menomonie on Saturday night, 80-67, to fall to 14-3 on the year.

The Falcons started fast in this contest.  The Falcons jumped out to a seven point lead at the first media timeout after Alise Holst hit a jumper. Stout would then go on a run to take its biggest lead, 35-27, with 2:51 to play. But the Falcons would respond and a layup by Taylor House with just a few seconds remaining in the first half would bring the Falcons within four points at halftime, 39-35.

The Falcons would not take the lead back for the rest of the game.  Stout began to pull away from the Falcons with about 13 minutes left when Danielle DeWitt hit two free throws to put Stout up by double digits. Kimmy Keehr of Stout would hit a shot from beyond the arc to put her team up 14 with 9:16 left in the game.

Tiffany Gregorich and Maranda Dohrn were the only Falcons to score in double figures. Gregorich had 12 points with seven assists and six rebounds in her attempt to take over the contest. Dohrn led the team with 16 points and added eight rebounds, falling just shy of a double-double. Holst had eight points to go along with a team high four steals on the evening.

The Falcons shot 33 percent from the field and 72 percent from the charity stripe. Defensively the Falcons allowed Stout to shoot over 50 percent for the evening and 43.9 percent from beyond the arc.  The Falcons had trouble containing Julia Hirssig who scored 20 and she grabbed a career-high 18 rebounds.

The Falcons will next host UW-Superior on Wednesday at the Karges Center. Action starts at 7 p.m. UWRF is now 6-3 in WIAC play. UWRF is a game out of first place in the WIAC standings.
