Falcons Advance to No. 1 in WIAC After Win Over UWEC

Posted by Falcons Fan on December 11, 2009

Dec. 10 , 2009

After a win over a nationally ranked UW-Stevens Point team last week, the Falcons took on UW-Eau Claire at the Karges Center on Thursday. UWRF led by just five at halftime, but the Falcons managed to pull out the win, 70-59.

The Falcons were led by Tiffany Gregorich, who finished with 20 points, shooting 6-9 from the field, 2-4 from the three-point line and 6-8 from the free throw line. Alise Holst shot 5-12 from the field and 0-3 from behind the arc, finishing with 10 points.

Eau Claire’s Hannah Mesick finished with 23 points and 12 rebounds, 10 of which were defensive. Callie Halama also added 18 points for the Blugolds and brought down 11 rebounds. Despite the front inside, the Blugolds beat themselves, committing 34 team turnovers.

Jenna Hanson and Maranda Dohrn each chipped in nine points for UWRF. In addition, Hanson led all Falcon rebounders, finishing the night with seven. Holst and Dohrn brought down six and five rebounds respectively, as well.

As a team, the Falcons had 19 turnovers, only four in the second half. As a result of solid defense, the team finished the game with 20 steals. They shot 27-66 (.409) from the field, 6-19 (.316) from the three-point line and 10-21 (.476) from the free throw line. UWRF pulled down 37 total boards and ended with 18 assists on the night; eight of those assists came from Hanson.

The win puts the Falcons at 7-0 overall (3-0 in the WIAC). The last time a UWRF women’s basketball team went 7-0 was in the 2000-01 season before losing in the eighth game at Viterbo University, 61-55. That start was the best start in women’s basketball history at UWRF. Tonight’s victory matches that record. The Falcons next game is Saturday, Dec. 12 at UW-Oshkosh; the game starts at 5 p.m.

Hanson Leads Team From Point Guard Position

Posted by Falcons Fan on December 9, 2009

Jenna Hanson

By Charlie Korenchen
UWRF Sports Information

Jenna Hanson is one of the Falcon women’s basketball team’s leaders from the point guard position. She is a 5-6 senior from Altoona Wis., and began her college career at Winona State before transferring to the UW-River Falls.

Hanson transferred from Winona State to the Falcon program because she decided to change her major. Hanson has averages of 6.6 points and 3.6 rebounds per game throughout her college career. She has helped the team to a 6-0 overall and 2-0 WIAC record so far this year averaging 5.8 points and four rebounds a game. She has 16 assists and seven steals for the No. 23 ranked Falcons.

She has been playing basketball since first grade. She continued by playing traveling basketball and then high school ball. One of her favorite basketball memories is making a last second shot in a high school semi-final playoff game. Another favorite basketball memory of hers is when the Falcons played the Badgers in Madison in an exhibition game at the start of last season.

Her teammates are going to be looking to her throughout the season to help them compete in the WIAC.

Falcon Head Coach Cindy Holbrook had a lot of great things to say about Hanson. “Jenna has really stepped up her game in the last year or so. She’s become a very nice shooter because she spends the time on it. She’s a hard worker and she’s really made a commitment to the success of our team this year. Jenna has become more vocal and has learned to let her competitiveness show more on the court. Her emotion is a great spark for her teammates.”

Hanson hopes that the team can finish in the top three or four in the WIAC this season.

Hanson, though, is just as impressive off the court as she in on the court. She has twice been on the WIAC Scholastic Honor Roll. She is a sociology major with a minor in criminal justice. When she is not studying she likes to play softball, shop, and hang out with her friends. She also enjoys fishing and camping.

Hanson has a lot of great plans for her future. After graduating from River Falls she hopes to be a probation agent.
