UWRF Falcons move to 11-0 with 63-59 win over the Presidents of Washington Jefferson

Falcons Earn Come-From-Behind Win in California; Stay Undefeated

The Falcon women’s basketball team earned a hard-fought 63-59 come-from-behind win over Washington & Jefferson on Tuesday night in Irvine, Calif.
The Falcons, ranked No. 20 in the latest D3Hoops.com poll, won their 11th straight game and stayed perfect on the season. Washington & Jefferson entered the game with a 7-1 overall record.
W&J led for most of the first half and had four seven-point leads. The last came with 3:53 to play. UWRF got to within three points, 22-19, with 22 seconds to play. But W&J’s Stephanie Smith hit a three with just seven seconds to go to give her team a 25-19 lead after the first 20 minutes.
The Falcons battled back in the second half and drew to within a couple of points several times. With 8:57 to go the Falcons finally took the lead, 41-40, when Alise Holst hit a jumper. W&J tied the game with 7:56 to go when Kennan Killeen hit two free throws. W&J then went on a 10-2 run over the next three minutes to take a 52-44 lead.
But the Falcons scored the next four points to get back in the game. Three of the points came on a three-pointer by Tiffany Gregorich and the Falcons trailed, 54-50. After Smith hit a jumper to give her team a six point, 54-48, lead with 2:52 to go, the Falcons put on the pressure to get back in the game. UWRF scored the next five points to get within one, 54-53, with 2:06 to go. With 1:32 to play Tiffany Gregorich tied the game, 56-56, when she scored on a layup, was fouled, and made the free throw.
After W&J hit a free throw, the Falcons scored four points to take a 60-57 lead. Kelli Hilt and Tiffany Gregorich both scored on layups to give the Falcons the lead with 46 seconds to play. But W&J’s Alyssa Oursler hit a jumper with 31 seconds to play to pull her team to within one, 60-59. With 23 seconds to play Tiffany Gregorich was fouled and she made both free throws to put UWRF ahead, 62-59. The Falcon defense held and with just eight seconds to go Brittany Gregorich was fouled and she made one of two free throws to seal the victory.
Tiffany Gregorich led the Falcons with 21 points and eight rebounds. She also had three steals and two assists. Holst added 13 points and four rebounds. Tess Lardie added nine points and four rebounds. Taylor House finished with a team-high 11 rebounds and she scored seven points. House finished with six offensive rebounds.
UWRF shot 21-63 (.333) from the field, including 3-16 (.188) from three-point range. They were 18-27 (.667) from the line.
W&J was led by Smith who scored 17 points and Oursler who scored 10. W&J shot 19-49 (.388) from the field, including 6-16 (.375) from behind the arc. They were 15-18 (.833) from the line.
On Saturday the Falcons will host St. Scholastica at 5 p.m., at the Karges Center.
